Presenting and Screen Sharing with the iPad

Have you ever wanted to give a lecture or presentation without dragging around a laptop? Have you ever wanted to freely move around the classroom or hall while presenting?

Through the miracle of a $99 box called Apple TV this is possible.  Apple TV is not really a TV.  You can think of it like a mini cable box or Roku.  Inside, Apple TV has the same A5 chip as the iPad and is capable of mirroring iPad or iPhone display to your TV.  The performance is impressive and like most Apple products it just works.  Occasionally there are apps like Amazon Instant video which will not work with Apple TV (yet), but the majority work in a smooth flawless fashion.

From a network perspective the iPad and Apple TV communicate with each other over wi-fi so you will need to use this in an environment with a wireless router or access point.  The iPad and Apple TV can not talk to each other directly, so if you are planning on taking the show on the road, don't forget to pack your wi-fi router.

The technology that Apple uses to make this magic happen is called Airplay.  The procedure for using Airplay can be found in the iPad users manual and is one click, one swipe, and a couple of taps. Stop being shackled to your podium or computer and feel the freedom.
